I'll bet that Locke had more screentime than Kate in season 2.

It would be interesting to see the breakdown for Seasons 1-3.

Indeed. Since S1, every season has had its pack of fresh characters delivery, taking screen time away from the original team, of course. In that regard, it would be interesting to look at the differences between then and now, along with the time of the newcomers.

I don't know if anybody ever did the math, but it seems to me like there were more newcomers than gone people, all in all. I might be wrong, maybe it's just an impression. Heck, I was so wrong with Ben's screen time for S4, he seemed to be the most seen character.

In the end, some you notice, some you don't. ;)

Indeed. I would have totally expected to see Ben leading this list. I guess that's testament to the impact he makes when he does appear.

I think Season 4 suffered from being The Ben and Locke Show a little too much. I found myself sighing with relief every time they cut away from Locke & Ben in Cabin Fever and went back to the freighter action. Ben and Locke's scenes in TMFT in S3 are among the best ever - "I hope that box is big enough to imagine yourself up a new submarine," and the rest of the exchange in Ben's house. I think the writers just took what had been a good combination and overused it.

MEPHANIE THOR:

I thought Internet access was more like 3%, but I could be wrong. ABC is going to worry more about you're Aunt and Uncle then they are about you, It's all about advertising and the other 95 or so per cent who could care less about the Internet. I am way north of the LOST demographic, but the more complicated the show the better I like it, any show. you're making entertainment sound like a dirty word, I thought that was the reason fore coming home and watching TV, also how can you be entertained if you don't follow the story. It seems to me like you have lost touch with the older generation. I would like to know what serialized shows you are talking about, other then 24 (great show) day time soaps, reality shows. It seems to me that most shows on broadcast TV are all primarily episode driven, with a small thread of serialization going through them.

Another person at the Fuselage came up with a couple of forumlas for all seasons.

http://forum.thefuselage.com/showthread ... ost2014772

Hi, as I perceive a lot of interest in this subject let me share my calculations to evaluate the comparative relevance of the Lost characters and the rankings obtained over the 4 seasons.

I have been using two ways of measuring the weight of each character per episode, and then have added for seasons ans in total (as per season 4).

Per the first method I count how many times one character speaks or their name is mentioned. In case that they appear in an episode without speaking or being mentioned I count it as 1 (or a bit more if their presence is especially relevant, as it happens with Aaron a lot of times).
(I think this method works against Jin and Sun somehow).

The rankings following the first method are:

Season 1:
Jack – 1821,
Kate – 1252, Charlie – 1065, Locke – 1044,
Sayid – 881, Sawyer – 823, Michael – 787, Hurley – 679, Boone – 655,
Claire – 575, Walt – 499, Shannon – 445, Jin – 388, Sun – 352,
Rousseau – 180, Aaron – 111,
Ethan – 79, Artz – 58, Rose – 54, Alex – 18, Ana Lucia – 16, Cindy – 15, Tom – 9

Season 2:
Jack – 1239, Locke – 1159,
Sawyer – 777, Ana Lucia – 685, Hurley – 662, Eko – 635, Michael – 633, Kate – 611,
Charlie – 535, Sayid – 487,
Claire – 382, Jin – 327, Desmond – 321, Ben (Henry Gale) – 299, Sun – 292, Libby – 239
Bernard – 216, Shannon – 177, Walt – 175, Rose – 172, Aaron – 142
Rousseau – 79, Tom – 71, Goodwin – 65, Cindy – 41, Alex – 33

Season 3:
Jack – 1168, Sawyer – 947, Kate – 903, Locke – 896
Juliet – 766, Ben – 729, Charlie – 709, Desmond – 678, Hurley – 601,
Sayid – 442, Sun – 322, Jin – 314, Claire – 302, Eko – 229,
Mikhail – 205, Nikki – 200, Alex – 189, Paulo – 171, Tom – 165, Pickett – 154, Richard – 114, Naomi – 107, Rousseau – 74, Aaron – 55, Bernard – 42, Rose – 30, Cindy – 14

Season 4:
Jack – 760,
Ben – 577, Kate – 571, Locke – 543, Sayid – 467, Hurley – 442,
Sawyer – 380, Desmond – 361, Daniel – 305, Juliet – 302,
Frank – 264, Michael – 257, Sun – 256, Miles – 229, Jin – 184,
Keamy – 174, Charlotte – 155, Claire – 136, Aaron – 111,
Naomi – 88, Alex – 83, Minkowski – 78, Tom – 67, Gault – 66, Bernard – 63,
Rousseau – 59, Charlie – 44, Ji Yeon – 34, Walt – 30, Rose – 28, Libby – 13

Total Seasons 1 – 4 (including F/B characters):

Jack – 4988,
Locke – 3642, Kate – 3337, Sawyer – 2927,
Hurley – 2384, Charlie – 2348, Sayid – 2276,
Michael – 1684, Ben – 1605,
Claire – 1395, Desmond – 1360, Sun – 1222, Jin – 1212, Juliet – 1068,
Eko – 865, Boone – 727, Walt – 714, Ana Lucia – 707, Shannon – 634,
Aaron – 419, Rousseau – 392, Bernard – 329, Alex – 323, Tom – 312,
Daniel – 305, Rose – 284, Frank – 264, Libby – 254, Christian – 233, Miles – 229,
Mikhail – 229, Nikki – 201, Naomi – 195, Penny – 193, Ethan – 179, Cooper – 179,
Pickett – 175, Keamy – 174, Paulo – 171, Charlotte – 155, Yemi – 155, Karl – 145,
Richard – 138, Sarah – 121, Liam – 118, Cassidy – 111, Goodwin – 106, Paik – 100

Other selected relevant characters: Charles Widmore – 87, Cindy – 70, Jacob – 47

Per the second method I have established six categories of appearance in an episode:
1- As protagonist (usually the person with F/B or F/F): I give them 2.5 points (or 3 if the presence on the overall episode is too big, as for instance Desmond’s 3.08 or 4.05).
2- As main support character for that episode (usually it is one, but sometimes it is two): I give them 2 points (or 2.5 if it is especially big, as Sawyer’s in 3.19).
3- As prominent character in the episode (usually 3 to 5 characters sharing the main story lines): I give them 1.5 points.
4- As normal appearance, a character who appears and talks in the episode but does not carry any special story line. I give them 1 point.
5- Characters that appear barely, just like an extra in the background, speaking at most one or two unimportant lines: 0 points.
6- Characters that do not appear in the episode (sometimes they are mentioned a lot, in that case they count in my first method of counting but not in this one): 0 points.

In this categorization I count every character, not just the regular cast: for instance Dave is the main support character for Hurley in episode 2.18.

Second Method Totals:

Jack – 144,
Kate – 117, Locke – 114.5, Sawyer – 109.5,
Hurley – 95, Sayid – 90, Charlie – 86,
Jin – 63, Sun – 62, Michael – 60,
Claire – 57, Ben – 55, Desmond – 44.5, Juliet – 42, Aaron – 30.5,
Shannon – 29.5, Walt – 27, Eko – 26.5, Boone – 26.5, Ana Lucia – 25,
Rousseau – 20, Tom – 17.5, Alex – 17.5, Bernard – 17.5, Rose – 16,
Libby – 13.5, Daniel – 13, Christian – 13, Frank – 12, Richard – 11.5,
Miles – 11, Naomi – 10.5, Charlotte – 10, Ethan – 10, Keamy – 9.5,
Mikhail – 9, Penny – 8.5, Dr. Candle – 8, Pickett – 7.5, Paulo – 7.5,
Nikki – 7, Karl – 7, Cindy – 7, Cooper – 7

Somehow I feel this method gives a better measurement of the comparative importance of all the characters.

I hope this helps, I appreciate a lot the work done by CrazyLatin007 and do not intend to deviate the debate in the thread or anything like that, just to offer some more data.
